Birth Arts Doula Training

Why Birth Arts Doula Training?

Birth is a journey. On the road to birth the woman is taken from womanhood to motherhood. The woman is transformed through birth, her birth, her experience. Honoring and preserving the birth experience is the role of the doula. Birth Arts doula trainers are both trained in the Wise Woman tradition and herbalism, these are also brought into the the training program

As a Doula you can have the exceptional privilege of sharing the unique journey the woman takes when she has a baby. As a Birth Arts Doula you know that you will also have a confident knowledge base, improved assurance and an incredible support network of experiences, trainer and student support. Birth Arts Doula Training explores the physical, scientific and spiritual aspects of birth and being a doula.

Birth Arts offers two ways to become a certified Birth Arts International Doula (BAICD):

Distance Learning Doula Training- Students can train completely via distance learning. Students receive the learning materials and submit assignments via email.

Weekend Workshops - These occur 10- 15 times a year. Our class dates page has updated training dates.

Certification Requirements

Attend One Childbirth Education Series- this can be a private childbirth education class or hospital based program. We require this so you know what women in your area are receiving as childbirth education. Hour requirement is 8 hours.

Book List- Read the required books from the book list. We require a few more books that most certifying bodies because we feel it is essential to view birth with an open mind and an educated mind. Reading two to three more books can assist in doing this but it also exposes students to different viewpoints and perceptions of the birth process.

Additional Assignments- You will find the Birth Arts workbook like no other doula training workbook. You will do assignments that look into your heart and challenge you mind and perceptions of birth and labor support. We want students to fully process and achieve their maximum potential. Assignments will challenge your views of birth, yourself and the work you will be doing.

Birth Attendance- We require the documentation of attendance at 5 births. Optimally students will attend 3 hospital births, one home birth and one cesarean birth. Any combination though and all births are acceptable, but students are not allowed to submit certification evaluations from more that 2 cesarean births or 3 home births, we want students to view birth in as many settings as possible. We do NOT require students to seek evaluations and assessment from the mother's other health care providers. We are training our doulas not to seek approval, but to work as fully trained professionals.

Technology Suggestions

Birth Arts Students who attend the weekend training workshop should know that their are additional assignments to be completed in the period afterwards before certification. There are no additional fees for certification or membership.
