What is a Postpartum Doula?

The following is a student blog post by Kendra-Brooke Hawes

“What is a Postpartum Doula?” is the first and most commonly asked question I get from people.

Once I explain what I do, often people say; “I should have had one!”  To which I reply “Yes, many people wish they had a Postpartum Doula but few know they exist.”

So, what is a Postpartum Doula, and how can they benefit you postpartum?

A Postpartum Doula provides in home support for families during the postpartum period. She nourishes, encourages, educates, and connects families to the resources they need.

A Postpartum Doula’s job, is to ultimately work herself out of a job, by giving families the tools they need to be the best parents they can be.

Many ignore the reality that having a baby changes everything, it is wonderful but challenging in so many ways; emotionally, physically, financially. Postpartum Doula’s prevent burnout and set parents up for success.

If postpartum care is so important, how come people don’t know about it? We didn’t used to need Postpartum Doulas, because postpartum families used to be cared for by their extended family and the community.

Now more than ever, people move for work and don’t live near their parents or families. Though many moms would love to stay with and care for their daughter’s after they’ve had a baby, not all can take the time off work.

The changing times require inventive ideas that provide yesterdays support in today’s world.

We cannot leave families stranded to sort things out on their own. The lack of postpartum support we have today, may be a major factor for the high rates of PPD in the U.S.  “Inadequate social support is one of the leading factors in developing depression or anxiety postpartum.”[1]

Why hire a Postpartum Doula? Because unsupported mothers are exhausted, struggling, and confused “why didn’t anyone tell them it would be this hard?”
